Luba Mboko cup

The mythical Luba cup bearer in African art

This Luba female figure, carrying a large bowl on top of her head, in a kneeling position, with finesse and many detailed motifs. This sculpture comes from a colonial family who brought this work back around 1690 - 1970.

The bowls are owned by both chiefs and diviners to honour and remember the critical role played by the first mythical diviner in the founding of the kingdom. The fine chiselling on the bowl and the form offered by the carver at the arms is a classic of objects carefully crafted and intended for high ranking figures!
