Lega Lukwakongo mask

Bwami masks in Lega culture

Lukwakongo Lega masks are small traditional masks of about six inches on average. These are masks involved in the initiation rites of the Bwami. Through these, seasoned kindi and yananio initiates could instill values in young initiates through fable-like proverbs. The small mask proposed here is classic in style, ovoid shape with a hollowed out face inlaid with kaolin.

The rim is decorated with small perforations. Originally, he wore a raffia beard.
