Songola mask
Initiation and African masks
Songola masks have the same functions as traditional masks in Lega culture. Among the Lega, the masks are rarely worn on the face but rather placed on panels for the largest of them, or carried by hand for the smaller copies such as the small wooden Lukwakongo masks. Here this mask is of classical dimension. Its more angular shape than a Lega mask, with a straight brow bone from which the raised bridge of the nose stands out, is to be attributed to the Songola.
The Songola are located between Lega territory in the east and Lengola territory in the west.
