Dan Mask
Minimalism in Dan African Art from the Ivory Coast
The interiority of this mask lies in its perfect balance and harmonious proportions. The face, inscribed in a regular oval, is characterised by an almost flat face where the forehead, cheekbones and chin are prominent. The mask is animated by eyes indicated by a simple slit, a broad nose and a prognathic mouth with lowered corners. The mask is surrounded by fine parallel lines, with scarification marks on the edge of the face, which characterise the style of the Diomande, a sub-group of the Dan. This authentic Dan mask has a beautiful dark brown patina.
