Baule Lomane mask

Baule: Treasures of West Africa

African masks of this type often bear a small gallinaceous bird on the head to awaken the dawn. This theme is taken up again and again in many variants, presenting a rooster, a hen, a stork, a hornbill and sometimes even several heads.

The exceptional beauty of this mask is due to the master sculptor, who has shown a consummate art, the bulging and drooping eyes, the slightly protruding mouth and a beautiful general symmetry of shapes.  These masks are the prerogative of famous dancers and are recognised for their beauty and political importance. In the criteria of physical and moral beauty, the lowered eyes and tight lips imply respect and recollection, two moral qualities that the Baule hold in high regard.

This mask comes from the private collection of a great and famous Belgian artist. It is sold on its personalized base as we recovered it from the estate.
