Kulango mask of Do
Masked dances in Ivory Coast
Ex French Tribal Art Collector
This traditional African mask belongs to the Dô society, among the Koulango, for which the clan chiefs organize the sacrifices at the end of Ramadan. Certain Islamized ethnic groups, such as the Ligbi (close to the Senufo) have preserved some animist traditions through the Dô society which is perhaps a survival of the Poro practiced among the Senufo. We find, seated at the top, a couple of very typical characters with the same facies as that of the mask itself.
This mask comes from the region of Bogofa and danced until the 1990s. Dô festivities still take place today and the masks still dance.
