Makonde Ikomba mask

African art from Tanzania

This African mask is rarely encountered, it is a Makonde "ikomba" or "ndimu" mask. It is a type of female mask about which we actually know very little apart from expert guesses.

It could be accompanied by a so-called "belly" mask representing the swollen abdomen of a pregnant woman. This set was worn by a male dancer.

Here the mask has been well preserved and has a slightly crusty patina.
