Tabwa Tongwe mask
East Africa: artistic conceptions
This African mask of Tabwa or Tongwé origin is one of the rare anthropomorphic masks of these ethnic groups located near Lake Tanganyika. In African art, we especially know among the Batabwa the famous Kiyunde masks representing the buffalo, force of nature, of which I offer you a magnificent example here.
The mask proposed here presents a worried face, gaping mouth, looking serious. There are many scarifications on the face and sides. The naturalistic treatment of the ears is worth mentioning.
This stylistic treatment makes it possible to attribute it either to the Tabwa located on the western shore of the lake, therefore in the D.R. Congo, or to the Tongwé, on the eastern shore, therefore in Tanzania.
