Edo leopard head
Animal representations in African art
The Bini Edo kingdom is very famous in African art for its bronzes and its fatal destiny. Among the extraordinary corpus of royal objects linked to the court, among which are heads, plaques, statues of queens, etc; we know of sculptures depicting the head of a leopard, the royal totemic animal par excellence.
Here, it is a wooden version of the famous bronze heads. It is a prestige object and not a mask, so it should not be worn by its owner.
