Kumu initiation mask
African initiation masks
This wild and powerful African mask comes from the Kumu / Komo cultural complex of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kivu. This African mask is associated with rituals practiced in the forest, in remote places. The ritual use of this Kumu mask is linked to initiation rites.
This primitive work of art is oval in shape, with large, penetrating circular sockets and a square, toothed mouth. A striking element is the treatment of the shapes and particularly the nose which, blending into the arch of the eyebrows, is totally abstract but in profile, gives this mask a bird's beak! (The small metallic loop could be a sign that a sorcerer has activated this mask with magical powers).
