Pende Mbuya mask
€850.00
During their festivities, the Pende, an ethnic group from the Democratic Republic of Congo, admired dancers wearing a Mbuya mask that represented each inhabitant of a village.
Each Mbuya mask was designed based on the dance, costume and music composed by its wearer. Their geometric, distorted and abstract features, characteristic of Pende tribal figurative art, inspired abstract artists, notably cubists like Pablo Picasso.
This mask comes from the collection of Jean-Marc Desaive, a great collector and specialist in African Pende art.
