Songye Kifwebe mask
The Kifwebe stand among the most renowned African masks. Born from the sculpting traditions of the Bwadi bwa Kifwebe, an influential society among the Songye people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, these masks are characterized by unique striations for each model, bulging eyes, and a rectangular mouth. The naso-frontal crest is only present on male Kifwebe masks. These masks were worn by dancers during circumcision ceremonies or funerals.
