Chokwe Luena mask

In African art, masks of beautiful young women, known as Mwana Pwo, among the Chokwe and Lwena, are especially renowned. These feminine masks are worn by male dancers who mimic the behavior of a woman in the prime of her life during popular celebrations.

This type of mask is recognizable by its large eye sockets and teeth carved to points, characteristic of Chokwe art.

On the upper part of the mask, we see a finely chiseled headdress which corresponds to that worn by the chiefs in the Lunda cultural complex.

This traditional mask is very close to the one published in Kongo Masks, M.-L. Felix, pp. 208-209.
