Songye Kifwebe doll

Reduced figurine representing an African dancer wearing Songye Kifwebe costume and mask.

The symbolism of arms, legs and accessories: regarding bifwebe masks, the arms and legs are always covered. On the arms wrapped in a tight-knit suit, the hands are gloved and the ends generally reveal only three fingers.

The clothing on each leg, including the animal skin or sole under the dancer's feet, is made from a single piece of fabric.

The legs symbolize the roots of the tree, of which the plume constitutes the top, the arms and the three fingers the branches.

The legs also symbolize the pestle and mortar.

These signs could be linked to the palette collecting the cassava paste characterized by the arms.

This object is one of the pieces constituting the important collection of the Soubry family built up over three generations. We recently dedicated an article to it on our blog.
