Bena Lulua Mask – Democratic Republic of the Congo

This african mask is attributed to the Bena Lulua people of the Kasai region in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It beautifully reflects the refined sculptural tradition for which Lulua artists are renowned, where elegant proportions and intricate carving combine to create a powerful ceremonial object.

The balanced face is dominated by large projecting tubular eyes with half-closed eyelids, giving the mask a serene and contemplative expression. A cylindrical protruding mouth, characteristic of certain Lulua masks, reinforces its sculptural presence. The elaborate crest is richly decorated with geometric and vegetal motifs, while the coiffure is enhanced by finely carved chevrons, rosettes and parallel linear patterns, demonstrating the skill of the sculptor.

Among the Bena Lulua, masks played an important role during public ceremonies, initiation rites and community celebrations honouring ancestors and reinforcing social prestige. They embody ideals of beauty while serving as spiritual symbols linked to protection and collective identity.

Its attractive patina, refined carving and richly engraved decoration make this an excellent example of traditional Central African art, equally suited for collectors and interior display.

The mask is supplied with its custom-made metal display stand.
