Senufo Katyelo divine maternity figure - SOLD OUT
Among the Senoufo, childbirth is celebrated through superb statues of maternity such as this one bearing the name of Katyelo. They are usually represented seated, carrying the child in the arms or giving him the breast of a generous chest as seen here.
The headdress is typical of the Senoufo, like the treatment of the face with a tapering chin and prognath. Stylistically the piece is close to the Deble or "rhythm pounder" used to beat the rhythm during ceremonies. These statues, too, are exclusively female.
