Zigua maternity
Mother and child in African art
African statue representing a mother in a standing posture with her child swaddled behind her back. The little figure stands at an angle to be able to look over the mother's shoulder.
We find in this Zigua maternity the stylistic treatment of the statues of northern Tanzania: slender body surmounted by a large head. The face is compact with small beaded eyes, pointed mouth and highlighted ears.
On the trunk, a characteristic element found among the Zigua, Pare, Mbugu, etc., a rope encompassing the neck, chest and upper arms. It illustrates the ornaments worn by certain northern ethnic groups, here Maasai women on the border between Tanzania and Kenya.
