Gbekre se Divination mouse box - Baule - Ivory Coast - SOLD

Divination in African art

The oracle boxes of the Baoulé are well-known divination objects. The diviner was used to predict the future or to find solutions to problems of all kinds. To do this, the diviner placed twigs in the box before placing a live mouse. He replaced the lid for a while and then removed it and interpreted the layout of the twigs modified by the mouse and find a meaning. This box of beautiful dimensions is adorned with faces similar to masks.

The lid is surmounted by several peaks. The box is raised from the ground by a perforated base. There are slightly different examples in the literature on the art of Côte d'Ivoire. A famous copy is present at Quai Branly, Paris.
