Ancestral worship in African art.
In a region disrupted by many movements of population, groups of different origin coexisted in the same villages and one could find in the same place the Lega, Bembé, Buyu ... whose main activity was hunting. Occasion of numerous rituals, it was also an important factor of cultural exchanges and mobility of the population. There are two types of shrines with figurines.
The traditional African figures of the region have long cylindrical torsos, square shoulders and massive heads. The ridged face is triangular in shape. The forehead is marked by eyebrows in an arc and the eyes are in "coffee bean". The mouth is dominated by the jaw and the angular chin. A chopped pattern simulates a stylized beard. Holes under the armpits allow to bind the statue, which must cause the suffocation of the person concerned.
