Baoule door

Doors in West African art

Baoulé or Yohouré granary door adorned with a large horned mask. Usual objects and furniture have always been the medium of choice for sculptors in African art. This object is no exception to the rule.

It was repatriated in the 1970s by a French traveler. Heavy wood.

A Baule door was set directly into an earthen house wall with pivot hinges, normally no latch, and a rope pull hanging through a hole in the center" (Susan Vogel in Christa Clarke, 2015:144).
