Mangbetu figurative spoon - SOLD OUT
Superb Mangbetu spoon whose handle is sculpted in the form of a male figure. Considering his style and his high headdress, he is a dignitary. Mangbetu African art objects are particularly popular. They were most often carved to order by dignitaries and royal members in order to establish their authority through prestigious objects.
The figure here wears the typical headdress of high-ranking Mangbetu men. Among the Mangbetu, the skulls of newborns, girls and boys, were lengthened with the help of coiled cords for several years. This ogive shape was enhanced by a cap also stretched upwards or backwards.
This unique and old piece was collected in northern Zaire on the border with the Central African Republic, not far from Bangui in the 1950s.
