Dan face mask carved in wood with a lustrous dark brown-black patina, distinguished by large pierced tubular eyes, a short nose and lips highlighted with red pigment. A carved relief adorns the forehead, while old fibre elements remain beneath the chin.

In Dan society, masks provide a visible form for ge or gle spirits, immaterial beings involved in ritual and social life. Depending on their identity, masks could fulfil very different roles, including entertainment, initiation, competition, protection and authority. Masks with large circular eye openings are particularly associated with the Gunyege type, traditionally connected with foot races and community champions.

The morphology of this example suggests a possible association with this category, although a degree of caution is appropriate: once removed from their original performance context, precise identification of individual Dan mask types can be difficult.
