Supreme jar bronze Bini Edo Kingdom Benin - SOLD OUT

Originally, this bronze vessel was suspended and contained a preparation to protect its owners and give them a supernatural strength. Its almost completely closed structure suggests that it contained a hot substance whose smoke escaped through the hole in the lid. Even today, on the occasion of ceremonies, the Oba is preceded by men who hold in their hands similar receptacles, but less richly crafted.

In some more traditionalist families, men wash themselves with water from these containers. It would seem to make them more enduring and prepare them for tough missions; previously, this ritual took place before the men left for the war.
