Bakongo figure

Funeral figures in African art Bakongo

Rare figure Bakongo en alliage bronzier, voir publication Lehuard Raoul, " Art Bakongo-Les centres de style", VOL.1, Arnouville : Arts d'Afrique Noire, 1989:78

It is not known how many figures were made: we know of three different types:

In Kongo African art, there are statuettes carved in stone (soapstone) and more rarely in metal (bronze). They are known as mintadi (sing. Ntadi).

This is a funeral figurine. The woman is shown here in a seated position, crossed legs called the funda nkata; this is the materialization of good repute. There is a proverb attached to this position: the elder sitting cross-legged wishes to be greeted with respect.
