It is not known how many figures were made: we know of three different types:
In Kongo African art, there are statuettes carved in stone (soapstone) and more rarely in metal (bronze). They are known as mintadi (sing. Ntadi).
This is a funeral figurine. The woman is shown here in a seated position, crossed legs called the funda nkata; this is the materialization of good repute. There is a proverb attached to this position: the elder sitting cross-legged wishes to be greeted with respect.
