Kongo Nkisi Nkondi fetish figure

African wooden statue depicting a standing figure, trunk slightly leaning forward as a sign of aggression towards spirits and conflicts. The face has been bleached with pigments, much like representing a dead person.
Nails were driven into the body, characteristic of a type of fetish well known in Zaire: the Nkisi Nkondi or Nkonde.
An intact ventral load sealed with a piece of glass or mirror is visible on the abdomen and is sealed by a thick patina. Who knows what magical power this coin can still exude ...

Piece brought back in the 1970s from Matadi.
