Pende Munyangi mask
The Eastern Pende or Bapende are known in African art for their very graphic traditional masks. This African munyangi mask with its ogival face surmounted by an appendage is no exception. The level of stylization is very high and geographical decorations are present.
In the Pende culture, the masks are very numerous and varied. They take part in ceremonies that are sometimes festive, sometimes linked to initiations, in particular that of the transition to adulthood, mukanda, at the end of which the boys are circumcised and become adult men.
