Chokwe Pwo mask - SOLD OUT
Chokwe African mask from the collection of a Belgian family who lived in southern Congo at the time of independence. In African art, we know the famous masks of beautiful young woman Pwo or Mwana Pwo among the Chokwe. These are female masks worn by men that simulate the behavior of a woman in the prime of life. Here, a triple headdress very fashionable in the first half of the 20th century. The patina slightly turns red. There are many scarifications on the forehead and under the eyes. The rope headdress, as is customary, is still very present. Beautiful state of conservation. The trimmed teeth are encrusted with white pigment in order to stand out from the face.
