Luba Kalundwe Lubuko pestle
Divination in African art Luba
Rare African divinatory object of the Luba: it is a Kalundwe style Lubuko cephalomorphic pestle. It is characterized by the presence of a hairstyle in streaked buns. The face is finely sculpted and a load is wrapped in a skin attached to the foot of the object. This African object belonged to an American collector (Illinois).
For more information, see the book Luba: aux sources du Zaire, F. NEYT pp. 40 to 50. There are examples of drumsticks such as this one, see attached photo.
In the Luba kingdom, there are several hierarchical institutions based on clairvoyance and divination. In this context, various types of objects are used: divination pestles like the one I present to you, katatora oracles, statues depicting mboko cup bearers, lukasa memorial tablets, etc.
Object acquired at auction in March 2021 estimated € 2,650 - € 2,950.
