Female Pwo, or Mwana Pwo, mask from the important sculptural tradition of the Chokwe people of Angola and southern Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Among the Chokwe, Pwo masks embody ideals of female beauty, dignity and social accomplishment while also referring to important female ancestors. They were notably performed during celebrations marking the conclusion of the mukanda boys’ initiation cycle. Their appearance accompanied the initiates’ transition into adulthood while emphasizing the essential place of women, motherhood and matrilineal descent within Chokwe society. Pwo could also perform together with the male figure Cihongo, their association being linked with fertility and communal prosperity.
This example displays strongly articulated facial features, with elongated half-closed eyes, a straight nose, full lips and discreetly incised scarification marks. Several engraved motifs appear on the forehead, while the monumental coiffure is organized into finely crosshatched geometric panels. Such attention to hairstyle and body markings reflects aesthetic and social ideals historically valued among the Chokwe.
