African Art : Magic, Power and Protection among the Bakongo

Authentic Bakongo magic, protection and power statuette consecrated by a Nganga sorcerer. This statue is intended to be carried with you in all circumstances, it ensures total protection and its size is not unrelated. This type of statue is one of the most prized Bakongo objects, with an important magical charge aggregated around the trunk. It is traditionally made up of various elements, including plant materials, sacrificial materials, seeds, cowries and cords. This statuette was worshipped by its original owner or by a sorcerer to appease and please the spirits ruling the world. In order to activate its power, the witchdoctor (nganga) insulted it, sang to it or stuck a nail, blade or horn into its body.

Dr. Biesmans travelled many times in the Democratic Republic of Congo among the Bakongo, Teke, Yaka, Nkanu, Kuba, Lele... between the 1960s and 1980s.
