Yoruba Ibeji figure
Twins in African art
This African wooden statuette is characteristic of traditional Yoruba art. The birth of twins is more common among twins than anywhere else in Africa. This specificity gave birth several centuries ago to the creation of twin statuettes called Ibeji. The peculiarity of this statuette lies in the wearing of a head covering perhaps of colonial influence. Residues of blue pigment are observed on the face in front of, originally, giving the Ibeji its magical power.
