Songye headrest

African dreams and prestige

African neckrest carved in a piece of dugout wood. It is composed of a standing figure, stocky and endowed with big feet anchoring him solidly to the ground. On his head he wears a flat seat. This object, which is both everyday and testifying to the prestige of its owner, has also been decorated with pearls.

Of Songye origin, this neckrest is particular since the majority of the specimens coming from Congo or ex Zaire are rather originating from the Luba kingdom of which we know a large number of stylistic currents.
