Montol Komtin figure
African art of the Benue
Wooden Montol male statue. The facial features are streamlined yet expressive as is the case with many pieces from Nigeria. The head rests directly on the shoulders. The arms are quite peculiar, arched inward.
The Montols live on the right bank of the Bénoué River. Members of the Komtin male secret society used them in divination rites and healing ceremonies.
