Hemba Singiti ancestor figure

The effigies of ancestors in African art
Hemba statues exclusively represent high-ranking male ancestors. Historically, anthropologists believed that the Hemba were an integral part of the Luba kingdom, but they are in fact a group in their own right. Their artistic corpus is centered around the cult of ancestors and their most famous objects are undoubtedly the beautiful effigies of ancestors, marked with dignity and falling under great sculptural mastery, brought together under the name Singiti.
This piece is no exception: although its lower part is missing, which is frequent given the age and difficult conservation conditions in the Congolese environment, the naturalistic face is remarkably serene.
