Dogon Hogon figure
African art: Dogon statuary
This small-sized African statue corresponds to the traditional canons of African art Dogon, a famous ethnic group in Mali. The latter are known for their impressive statuary as well as for many other objects such as masks. The religious framework that accompanies these objects is very complex, with the cult dedicated to the ancestors as its central element.
The wooden character proposed here is a representation of a hogon, that is to say an old sage elected with or without his approval to this position. It was a social privilege accompanied by obligations and prohibitions. Among these, the hogon had to live secluded in a hut at a distance from the village in exchange for which the villagers provided for all his needs. He was consulted for oracles and to decide on conflicts, among other things.
For a fine collection of authentic Dogon art objects, I invite you to refer, for example, to the work of Jan Baptist Bedaux, a specialist in the field.
