Giacometti and Nyamwezi art
For many years, the art of East Africa had been neglected by the West. An exhibition entitled Africa, Art of a Continent for the first time gave equal space to the art of the different regions of the continent and revealed the importance of Nyamwezi statuary.
This emotionally based art originated in the eastern part of Unyamwezi, neighbouring the Sukuma countries from which the powerful expressionism of the style is borrowed.
According to Nancy Nooter (in Philipps, 1995, p. 162), the rare Nyamwezi statues are almost all linked to ancestor worship. Some of them, characterised by their filiform silhouette reminiscent of Giacometti's work, are said to be linked to divination.
