These two African statues were carved to celebrate the birth of twins in the Yoruba ethnic group, Nigeria. Called ibeji or ibedji, these statuettes of twins were treated with respect and consideration by the mother of the children. She took care of them as well as she would their human counterparts. There are elements such as a high headdress, pearl necklaces of the most beautiful effect, and sandals with thick soles.
