Songye Nkisi Janiform Figure - SOLD OUT
Rare are the occasions to contemplate a Songye statue of janus type, this term indicates a two-sided statue. It is of good craftsmanship and beautifully decorated. The spirits of the dead, Mikishi, whether benevolent or malicious, were of great importance to the Songye. They played an essential role in their daily life. Fetishes small and large, Mankishi (singular Nkishi), serving individuals or entire communities, were ineffective until activated with Manga, concoctions of magical substances, applied by experienced specialists who possessed the mystical knowledge necessary to manage spirits.
