Songye rattle

Wooden Songye divination rattle. This object surmounted by a typical Songye head found on nkishi power statues or Kifwebe masks, has a ringed neck that is also found on other objects cf. attached photo.

Originally, small calabashes were fitted to the pike. Divinatory rattles also exist in African Luba art, for example.
