Konantré Baule heddle pulley

Weaving and traditional African art in Ivory Coast

Weaving was a primary activity in Côte d'Ivoire. The objects used for this activity therefore also served as a support for the artistic expression of the sculptors. So, I am offering you this remarkable Konantré Senoufo loom pulley stirrup. It is complete, with its small mobile pulley, and surmounted by two heads, one of which is surmounted by a pecking bird like the masks of the same ethnic group. That said, in the treatment of the face, we feel a strong Koulango influence.

Other ethnic groups of course practiced this activity, and there are also carved stirrups, such as the Baoulé, Gouro, etc.

Observe in attached photos a Senufo weaver in action, we notice the presence of this stirrup at the top of the image. An operating plan is also attached to understand all the complexity of this activity.
