Mangbetu figure - SOLD OUT
Mangbetu : Art and African civilisation
In the past, nobles were keen to possess objects characterised by their refined qualities. Examples of Mangbetu statuary are rare. This statue is similar to a similar example in the inventory of the Museum of Ethnography in Berlin and Stuttgart.
Proudly standing with his arms at his sides, he displays a severe and powerful plastic conception.
The Mangbetu live between the Uele River in the north and the Bomokandi River in the south. This people, of patrilineal descent, come from Sudan, from where they left at the end of the 17th century. The language they speak is therefore of Sudanese origin.
The Mangbetu practise the elongation of the skull (dolichoprosia) and the women have a characteristic halo hairstyle that is often reproduced in their art.
