Kusu Hemba Bust
€300.00
The Kusu reside in various clans established on the left bank of the Lualaba River in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Each clan is led by a chief called wembi, who is assisted by village and family chiefs in the management of power.
Regarding African art, the Kusu have embraced the styles and artistic and cultural codes of their neighbors: the Hemba, the Luba, and the Songye. As a result, the influence of these groups can be found in Kusu statuary.
The sculpted bust figures represent revered ancestors or great leaders whom the community calls upon in difficult times to aid the entire community. Smaller figures, like this one, serve the same role on an individual scale.
