Luba Kifwebe Kikashi mask

African art: The art of shapes and design among the Songye Kifwebe Luba

Very beautiful African mask where the top ends in a dome. The eyes of this African Kikashi Luba mask are classically shaped, with fine slits and slightly arched eyebrows, a triangular nose and a crescent-shaped mouth. All these shapes give this mask an unparalleled beauty, while the surface is striated and enhanced with kaolin.

Among the Songye, a mask is nicknamed Kifwebe, a term given to masks representing spirits and characterised by striations. Kifwebe society used them to ward off disaster or any threat, and the masks, complete with a woven suit and a long raffia beard, were danced in various ceremonies. They are worn by men who act as policemen at the request of a leader or to intimidate the enemy
