Teke Tsaye Kidumu Mask

Cubism in African art

I am offering you here a mask from the Kidumu company of Teke Tsaye, Zanaga region in the Republic of Congo.
The Batekes carved very famous circular masks, flat and decorated with symbolic designs. This society is a political and religious institution created in the 19th century on the occasion of the split of the Tsaye from the Teke mother ethnic group. The Kidumu association sponsors major events in social life that are also found in other ethnic groups: circumcision, marriage or death of leaders, alliances and judgments.

We see in the pop-up photo that these masks were worn with a feather or raffia headdress.
