Luba Songye headrest

African art and everyday objects from the DRC

Although Luba and Songye societies have a patrilineal structure, creation myths reserve a privileged place for women. Many sculptures celebrate femininity, and this headrest, a small everyday object, shows a woman in the everyday act of supporting a load on her head. The face of this sculpture is reminiscent of the Kifwebe masks, while keeping a part of naturalism and cubism in the body with its neat features and the usual thick patina.
