Nkumba Mulima mask Lega - SOLD OUT
The traditional African masks of Bwami in Lega art
The body of Lega art is often cited as the richest and deepest of all African arts, which makes it highly appreciated and sought after, and rightly so. The mask proposed here, coming from the collection P. Vandenbergh as many other pieces of the Congo that we have the pleasure to propose to you, is a mask inspired by the character Mulima who is at first a statue.
We recognize this aphoristic female character through this authentic mask wavy body, zigzag. In African lega / warega art, most of the pieces are related to the Bwami society that governs the social and moral order. Each piece is at once initiatory and has a complex meaning expressed in the form of aphorism or proverb, and also bears witness to the rank of the initiate who possesses it.
