The cult of ancestors in african art

This Dogon statue is carved from a pure and powerful wood, covered with a crusty patina. Each fraction of the Dogon has a religious leader, the Hogon. The Hogon is the priest of the lebe which is a cult dedicated to the mythical ancestor Lebe Serou. His house is also a sanctuary that he cannot leave. He is the oldest man and the highest authority of the fraction in the priestly hierarchy.
